Emeritus Board
Jennifer Rienks, PhD, Director, joined the Board in 1998. She resigned upon her election to the Marin Healthcare District Board in November 2006. Jennifer is a health researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. She conducts community-based research to develop effective AIDS prevention strategies, focusing primarily on high-risk women. Jennifer received her graduate degrees in Social Psychology from the University of California, at Santa Cruz. She has been active in a number of organizations focusing on health, peace and justice, anti-nuclear, and environmental issues.
Nancy Williams-Olesen, PhD, President and Director, 1998 to 2002. A licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, Dr. Olesen works with high-risk children and families. For several years, she lived and worked as a psychologist in Kenya and Denmark. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Lynn S. Carman, LLB, Founder and President, 1982 to 1998. Mr. Carman also served as staff attorney until 1995. He became chief counsel for the Pharmacy Defense Fund, a non-profit public interest law foundation for pharmacy health care. In recent years, Mr. Carman has been involved with litigation to stop the now-defunct UCSF/Stanford merger, and to stop services cuts at San Francisco General Hospital and Laguna Honda. He received his undergraduate education at Stanford University and his law degree at Golden Gate University.
Mr. Carman's most recent legal success was stopping the 5% MediCal cuts in 2003, thereby protecting healthcare for California 's poor and most vulnerable residents, which resulted in stopping a second round 10% cut. Mr. Carman received a 2004 AVA for this important legal victory on behalf of the poor and disabled.
Frederick S. Mayer, R.Ph, MPH, Founding Director, 1982-1988. Fred Mayer served in various capacities during his tenure. Fred has a distinguished national and international record of public service. He is founder and President of Pharmacist Planning Services, Inc. (http://www.ppsinc.org). This non-profit organization promotes consumer public health and pharmaceutical information. It originated and sponsors National Condom Week and created the pregnant man posters ( Mr. Mom ).
Mervyn I. Silberberg, Founding Director, 1982 to 1998. A San Francisco realtor, Mr. Silberberg is a direct descendent of John Reed, the original Spanish land grantee of southern Marin. His grandmother was Hilarita Reed, the daughter of John Reed.
Albert E. Gately, LLB Founding Director. Mr. Gately was a well-respected administrative judge for the California State Workers Compensation Board.
Clark Blaisdel, Founding Director. As head of North Bay Ecumenical Homes, Clark Blaisdell probably has been responsible for building or facilitating the building of more affordable housing for low and moderate income families than anyone in California. Currently, Northbay Family Homes continues to facilitate ownership and rental opportunities for the north Bay workforce and seniors.
Ruth Logue Lederman. Active member of the Gray Panthers of Marin until moving from Marin County.
Rev. E. Paul Perkins. Widely respected Marin County minister who died shortly after joining the Board.
Alexander M. Riskin, MD. Active member of the Gray Panthers of Marin until moving from Marin County
Antonio C. Velasquez, JD. Specialist in immigration law, Mr. Velasquez was the first attorney of Spanish surname admitted to practice law in California.
